I think people with below par grammar or spelling should really try to improve their language. Just so that their sentences are more pleasing to the eye. But of course, I applaud their courage for even at least making the effort to try. And thank them for at least having communicated.
I am a grammar and spelling tyrant. But I don’t correct people on the spot or in public when they make these errors. Etiquette books and human societal norms say that’s too rude.
So I take the path of the coward pedant and correct them on my blog. Take for example this sentence in an email I received from University staff:
Pls be reassured that your feedback is confidential and it will not affect your grade for the course if you really provide the truth feedback or any negative feedback.
First, since “assured” wasn’t mentioned before this or after this, there is no need to add a “re” in front of the “assured”.
Second, there is no such thing as “truth feedback”, only “truthful feedback”.
Thirdly, the writer is assuming that “truth feedback” has a negative connotation, by writing “will not affect your grade for the course” in front. In fact, truthful feedback can be very positive as well.
And lastly, in “really provide the”, “really” is really not necessary. The word can be omitted from that sentence.
Well, being grammatically correct is not always important. Succint communication is important as well. But, this blog was meant to be funny. And one way to be funny is to laugh at other’s mistakes or yourself. This time, I’m not laughing at myself.

We love to hear your views.
